The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Taraba State has criticised Governor Kefas Agbu’s statewide address on the prolonged absence of Deputy Governor Aminu Abdullahi Alkali, describing it as “mere rhetoric” that failed to provide a concrete solution.
In a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Aaron Artimas, the APC accused the governor of ignoring the constitutional implications of Alkali’s absence from office since last year. The party noted that it had earlier raised concerns when the deputy governor’s absence exceeded the three months allowed by law, calling it a “brazen violation” of the constitution.
The APC faulted the governor’s tone, saying he “moralised and personalised” the matter and even introduced religious sentiments instead of presenting a clear plan of action.
While expressing sympathy for Alkali’s health challenges, the party urged the government to engage in sincere dialogue with his family. It suggested that if the deputy governor can no longer perform his duties, he should be allowed to resign honourably and receive all his entitlements to aid his recovery.
Governor Agbu, in his broadcast, appealed to residents to set politics aside and pray for Alkali’s speedy recovery, insisting, “This is not a political matter; it is a human one. We must lift him in prayers.”
