Police in Benue State have rescued a kidnapped female nursing student and killed a suspected gang leader during a gunfight in Agbungun community, Logo Local Government Area.
The incident occurred on November 21 at about 7 p.m., when six armed men on two motorcycles stormed Agbungun and abducted the student, whose identity is yet to be confirmed.
Acting promptly, the Divisional Police Officer of Ayilamo deployed patrol and tactical units to pursue the kidnappers to their hideout in nearby Biki community.
During the operation, the suspects engaged police in a gun duel, leaving one of the gang members wounded.
He was taken to a hospital but was pronounced dead.
The deceased was later identified as Avalumun Nyamver, also known as “Ornu,” the gang leader.
The nursing student escaped unharmed and has been safely reunited with her family.
Police also arrested a female suspect, Mngusuun Torkende from Ucha in Ukum LGA, who was found at the gang’s hideout.
She told investigators she had come to the village for a burial and was persuaded by the deceased gang leader to stay behind.

Police said efforts were ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects, while the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) has launched a full investigation.
