The Federal Government has formally congratulated Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following his conferment with the prestigious “Great Ambassador of the University of Jos” award.
In a letter personally signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, the government described the recognition as a testament to Amupitan’s lifelong dedication to academic excellence, legal scholarship, and selfless national service.
The award was presented during the University of Jos’s 50th Alumni Anniversary and the combined 35th and 36th Convocation Ceremony held on 12 December 2025.
“This prestigious honour is a fitting tribute to your exemplary leadership, sterling public service, and enduring commitment to democratic governance, national development, and institutional integrity,” the SGF stated in the letter.
Akume also highlighted Amupitan’s role in strengthening Nigeria’s electoral system, noting that his leadership has inspired confidence and earned respect nationally and internationally.
A distinguished alumnus of the University of Jos, Amupitan obtained his LL.B. (Hons) in 1987, was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1988, earned an LL.M. in 1993, and a Ph.D. in Law in 2007. He was promoted to Professor of Law in 2008 and elevated to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in 2014.
With over 50 publications to his name, his expertise spans the Law of Evidence, Corporate Governance, Company Law, Privatisation Law, and Reforms in Nigeria’s Electoral Jurisprudence.
Beyond his legal scholarship, Amupitan has a strong administrative track record, having served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) and Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Jos.
He also served on the University’s Governing Council and as Pro-Chancellor/Chairman of Council at Joseph Ayo Babalola University (JABU).
Akume emphasized that the University of Jos award not only celebrates Amupitan’s individual achievements but also affirms the positive impact of the university’s alumni on national development.
“You have remained a worthy ambassador of the University, reflecting its ideals of excellence, service, and responsible citizenship,” the SGF added.
The Federal Government expressed optimism that this recognition would further motivate Amupitan to continue delivering transparent and credible electoral processes for Nigeria.
The “Great Ambassador” award remains one of the highest honours the University of Jos bestows on its alumni, reserved for those who have reached the pinnacle of their careers while upholding the highest ethical standards.
