The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has raised concerns over the reported conviction and imprisonment of a Christian woman in Borno State, questioning whether her fundamental rights and religious freedom were protected.
The woman, identified in reports as Lami Samuel Dawa, was reportedly convicted in a case allegedly linked to the conversion of an adult woman to Christianity.
However, CAN said it was still verifying the circumstances surrounding the case and the legal basis for the conviction.
In a statement on Saturday, signed by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the association disclosed that an appeal had already been filed, adding that it would allow the judicial process to take its course.
CAN said the development raised important questions about the protection of religious freedom and fundamental rights guaranteed under the Nigerian Constitution.

“The Association believes that every individual has the right to freely choose, change or practise their religion or belief without coercion, intimidation or unlawful punishment,” the statement said.
The Christian body called on relevant authorities to ensure that the rights of all parties were protected and that justice was administered in accordance with the Constitution and applicable laws.
It added that it would continue to monitor the case and engage relevant authorities through appropriate legal and institutional channels.
CAN also reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful coexistence and the protection of the fundamental rights and freedoms of Nigerians, irrespective of their religious backgrounds.
