Two people have been killed in a reprisal attack in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, following an earlier shooting along the Jos–Bauchi highway.
A security source said the March 29 incident occurred at Angwan Rukuba junction, where some residents allegedly launched retaliatory assaults on passersby after a morning attack carried out by gunmen.
The initial attack, which happened at about 7:30 a.m., involved armed assailants in a vehicle who opened fire on commuters, killing and injuring several before escaping.
Security sources offered conflicting accounts on those responsible—some suggested cultists, while others pointed to Fulani bandits, Boko Haram, or unidentified criminal elements, noting that the attackers fled in a vehicle.
“In the aftermath of the shooting, some angry residents reportedly attacked unsuspecting passersby on the highway, leading to the death of two persons,” the source said.
Tension escalated further after a foreigner visited the scene and staged a demonstration, making statements perceived as threatening and accusing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of ignoring what he described as ‘Christian genocide.’
In response to the rising unrest, the Plateau State Government announced an immediate 48-hour curfew to curb further violence.
Casualties from the incidents were evacuated to the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), while security agencies have launched investigations to identify and arrest the perpetrators. No arrests had been made at the time of filing this report.
The source emphasized the importance of sustained security presence and community engagement to ease tensions and prevent a breakdown of law and order.
Security agencies have intensified patrols and surveillance as efforts continue to restore calm and ensure public safety.
