Kidnappers who attacked a church in Eda-Oniyo, Ilejemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State, killing a pastor and abducting 16 worshippers, have reduced their ransom demand from N1 billion to N150 million.
The victims, who include women and children, have remained in captivity for six days since the incident.
Chairman of the Eda-Oniyo Progressive Union, Dr. Rufus Ajayi, disclosed the development while addressing a state government delegation led by the Deputy Governor, Monisade Afuye.
According to Ajayi, efforts by the community to negotiate with the abductors have so far been unsuccessful.
“Sixteen people abducted six days ago are still with their captors. There are many women and young children among them. The kidnappers are now demanding a minimum of N150 million as ransom. The community made an offer, but it was rejected. We are appealing to the government to assist us. This is an emergency situation,” he said.
The traditional ruler of the community, the Eleda of Eda-Oniyo, Oba Julius Awolola, urged the government to intensify security measures, particularly in border areas linking the state with Kwara State.
He described the attack as traumatic and devastating, while appreciating the state government’s support during the crisis.
Meanwhile, the state government has condemned the attack and reiterated its commitment to tackling insecurity.
Governor Biodun Oyebanji said authorities are responding swiftly to the situation and announced precautionary measures, including the suspension of night vigils, advising that religious activities be held during the day for safety reasons.
He also warned residents against collaborating with criminal elements, urging informants to desist in the interest of community security and the state’s image.
The government assured residents that comprehensive strategies are being implemented to protect lives and property across the state.
