A civil society organisation, Christian Conscience Group, has called on political stakeholders to reinforce internal democracy within their parties as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
The call was contained in a statement issued after the group’s monthly meeting and made available to journalists in Lagos. It was jointly signed by the National Chairman, Yetunde Akinluyi, and National Secretary, Kolawole Verrals.
The group said it had been closely monitoring ongoing party primaries across the country, congratulating successful candidates while urging those who lost to seek redress through internal mechanisms rather than defecting to other parties.
“We have watched with keen interest the ongoing party primaries across the country. We congratulate those who emerged victorious while urging those who lost to explore internal mechanisms for redress rather than defecting,” the statement read.
It stressed that strengthening internal party processes is essential for the continued growth of Nigeria’s democracy, noting that all political parties must ensure transparent and credible primaries.
The organisation also urged political actors to prioritise national interest over personal ambition and called on citizens to remain engaged as the next general elections approach.
Beyond electoral matters, the group raised concerns over the country’s security situation, calling on the Federal Government to adopt more proactive and innovative strategies to tackle persistent insecurity.
“For the upteenth time, we call on the government to think outside the box in addressing insecurity. Nigerians deserve a safer nation where communities are not left at the mercy of bandits,” the statement added.
While acknowledging the efforts of security and intelligence agencies, the group urged them to intensify intelligence gathering and deploy more resources toward identifying and apprehending criminal elements and their collaborators.
It concluded by condemning ongoing violence across the country, declaring that “enough is enough” of the continued killings.
