Aminu Abdussalam, the immediate past Deputy Governor of Kano State, has emerged as the governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress in Kano, after a last-minute realignment cleared the path for his emergence as the party’s flag-bearer ahead of the 2027 elections.
The development followed a strategic shift by Nasiru Gawuna, who had initially declined the party’s offer of the Kano Central senatorial ticket but reversed his position after consultations with political allies and key stakeholders.
Gawuna’s decision to accept the Senate ticket effectively removed the main obstacle to Abdussalam’s governorship bid, consolidating the NDC’s Kano structure around a clearer line-up of candidates.
With Abdussalam now confirmed as the NDC’s governorship candidate, the party enters the race with a figure whose tenure as deputy governor gives him a degree of institutional familiarity with the state’s governance landscape — a profile the party is expected to leverage as it seeks to establish itself as a competitive force in Kano’s 2027 contest.
