A suspected motorcycle thief, identified as Ahmad Dankoli, was lynched and his body set ablaze by an angry mob in Balare town, Ajingi Local Government Area of Kano State, following allegations that he attempted to steal a motorcycle.
The incident occurred on Sunday night during the town’s market day.
The councillor representing Balare Ward, Shu’aibu Abdulmumin Yalo, said the deceased was accused of trying to steal a motorcycle belonging to a trader at the market.
According to him, the suspect was apprehended by a resident, after which a crowd gathered and began assaulting him until he died.
Yalo said security operatives responded to the scene and initially evacuated the body, but were overpowered by irate youths who seized the corpse and set it on fire.
He attributed the mob’s action to growing frustration over repeated motorcycle thefts in the community, revealing that more than 32 motorcycles had reportedly been stolen from the market in recent months.
The incident reportedly caused panic among traders, forcing many to abandon the market on Sunday night before normal activities resumed the following day.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Kano State Police Command, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the incident had not yet been officially reported to the command but assured that the police would verify the information and investigate the matter.
