The Federal Government has launched Nigeria’s first Manu-Tech University Innovation Pod at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, in Abia State, in a move aimed at turning universities into centres for innovation, manufacturing and entrepreneurship.

The facility is expected to bridge the gap between academic research and industry by supporting the development of commercially viable products, promoting local manufacturing and encouraging technology-driven enterprise.

Speaking at the unveiling, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, said universities must evolve beyond their traditional roles of teaching and research to become drivers of industrial growth and economic development.

According to him, the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s efforts to promote innovation, create jobs and diversify the economy through education and technology.

Alausa explained that the Innovation Pod is a collaborative project involving the Federal Government, the United Nations Development Programme, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture and other stakeholders.

He said the facility brings together researchers, students, innovators, manufacturers and investors to transform ideas into market-ready products through research, prototyping and commercialisation.

The minister noted that the innovation hub incorporates technologies such as artificial intelligence, industrial automation, digital design, agro-processing and advanced manufacturing to support enterprise development.

He added that locating the project in Abia State would leverage the industrial and entrepreneurial ecosystem of Aba, creating stronger links between university research, manufacturing and private sector investment.

According to Alausa, the initiative is expected to strengthen local production, create employment opportunities, promote value addition to Nigeria’s agricultural and mineral resources and improve the competitiveness of locally manufactured products within the African Continental Free Trade Area.

He also disclosed that the Innovation Pod would serve as a pilot project, with similar facilities planned across the country’s geopolitical zones based on their economic strengths.

The minister urged students and researchers to utilise the facility to develop innovative solutions to national challenges and convert research outcomes into products and businesses capable of competing globally.
