The Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission (BASIEC) has distributed sensitive electoral materials ahead of Monday’s local government council elections across the state.
The commission said adequate arrangements had been made to ensure the elections are conducted peacefully and credibly across the 20 local government areas.
BASIEC Chairperson, Hajiya Jummai Salamatu Abubakar, disclosed this on Saturday during the flag-off of the distribution of the materials in Bauchi.
She said 15 political parties had indicated their readiness to participate in the election, adding that logistics had been arranged for the safe transportation and deployment of electoral materials to the designated local government areas.
Abubakar said voting would take place from 8am to 3pm on Monday, August 17, 2026, and urged residents to come out and vote for candidates of their choice.
She said the sensitive materials would be transported under tight security to designated local government areas before being deployed to polling units.
According to her, chairmanship elections would be conducted in 19 of the state’s 20 local government areas, while councillorship elections would hold across all 20 councils.
No chairmanship election will be conducted in Shira Local Government Area because the position was filled through an earlier by-election.
Representatives of the participating political parties witnessed the handover of the materials to electoral officials for onward deployment.
The Secretary of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Khalid Arewa, expressed confidence in the preparations for the election, saying the participating parties were satisfied with the process.
“We have full confidence that, Insha Allah, this election will be credible, rancour-free, fair and just,” he said.
Arewa confirmed that 15 political parties had purchased nomination forms and were ready to participate in the poll.
Meanwhile, the Bauchi State Police Command said it had deployed personnel across the state to secure voters, electoral materials and other stakeholders before, during and after the election.
The command warned against electoral violence, ballot box snatching, thuggery, vote buying and selling, voter intimidation and other attempts to disrupt the exercise.
It said perpetrators, sponsors and accomplices would be arrested and prosecuted regardless of their political affiliation or status.
The command also assured residents that security personnel would maintain professionalism, neutrality and respect for human rights during the election.
In a related development, Governor Bala Mohammed has declared Monday, August 17, a work-free day across Bauchi State to enable civil and public servants to participate in the local government elections.
