The White House has launched a 24-hour streaming channel featuring footage of President Donald Trump and his administration, as a dispute over media access escalates between the Trump administration and major US news organisations.
Dubbed “TRUMP TV: The Essentials Station,” the channel began streaming on Monday through the White House website and YouTube, offering presidential speeches, administration announcements, videos and previously recorded highlights.
The White House said the service would be updated in real time and provide access to the administration’s “biggest moments” in one place.
The launch coincided with the suspension of the White House television press pool after the administration barred CNN, MS NOW and Politico from White House access.
CNN, ABC, CBS, Fox News and NBC traditionally rotate responsibility for providing pooled television coverage of presidential events, with the footage shared among other news organisations.
CNN was scheduled to handle the pool on Monday but was prevented from carrying out the assignment. The other four networks subsequently declined to provide a replacement crew, effectively suspending the pool’s coverage of Trump’s events.
The dispute has also moved to court, with CNN, MS NOW and Politico challenging the administration’s decision to bar their journalists from the White House.
The White House has defended its restrictions, while the affected media organisations have argued that the ban interferes with independent reporting of the administration.
The absence of the traditional television pool was evident during Trump’s Monday appearance at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new White House helipad, where television viewers could see the event but were unable to hear his remarks through the normal pool feed.
Against that backdrop, the new White House-operated channel provides the administration with a direct means of distributing video of Trump and official events without depending on the traditional television pool.
The first Trump TV programming included previously recorded footage and presidential highlights rather than functioning solely as a live feed of ongoing presidential events. The White House has described the service as a 24/7 stream of major remarks, videos and highlights.
