More than 350 athletes are expected to compete at the 14th Korean Ambassador’s Cup, which begins today at the Mo Arena in Abuja, with a performance by South Korea’s renowned Kukkiwon Demonstration Team scheduled for the final day.
Nigeria Taekwondo Federation (NTF) President, Tayo Popoola, said the tournament would combine competitive action with entertainment and learning opportunities for athletes and officials.
Popoola said the Kukkiwon Demonstration Team would perform live on Sunday, October 26, as part of activities marking the end of the competition.
“We are proud to host this event in Nigeria. On the final day of the competition, Sunday, October 26, the Kukkiwon Demonstration Team will perform live,” he said.
He thanked the leadership of the National Sports Commission for supporting the tournament, adding that preparations had been completed.
The Korean Ambassador to Nigeria, Yo-an Jeong, is among the dignitaries expected to attend the event.
Ahead of the competition, the NTF, in partnership with World Taekwondo, classified more than 20 Para-Taekwondo athletes at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium on Thursday, October 22.
The exercise, held under the theme “Empowering Abilities Through Taekwondo,” is aimed at expanding opportunities for Nigerian athletes with disabilities to compete internationally, particularly at the World Para Taekwondo Championships.
International classifier Claudia Sanches led the exercise and praised the athletes’ abilities, expressing optimism about their prospects on the global stage.
The Korean Ambassador’s Cup is expected to bring together athletes across various categories, further promoting taekwondo development and international sporting ties between Nigeria and South Korea.
