The African Desertification Control Initiatives (ADCI), a non-governmental organization (NGO), has partnered Yusuf Maitama Sule University Kano to plant 300 trees on the campus of the university.
The tree planting, according to ADCI, would help in addressing the menace of heat zones and make the university campus greener.
ADCI Country Director, Umar Dahiru, told newsmen in Kano shortly after flagging off the tree planting campaign at the university that the aim of the NGO’s tree planting project is to encourage massive re-greening of the campus and reduce heat that is largely emanates as a result of climate change.
The partnership with YMSUK under the varsity’s “control of climate change and greener Campus” is in line with the ADCI’s climate change project to make campuses greener and to encourage staff and students imbibe the culture of tree planting as a means to promote environmental sustainability.
According to Dahiru, the group has been engaging in tree planting campaigns in schools across the country.
He said it will sustain the initiative so as to contribute in controlling desertification, erosion, heat wave, flooding, climate change among others.
YMSUK Vice Chancellor, Prof. Atiku Muktar Kurawa, said the varsity is committed to promoting a sustainable environment through tree planting.
Prof. Kurawa noted that low number of trees at the university permanent site makes the campus tough to the students and staff, but with plenty trees the campus is gradually returning into more habitable environment.
The vice Chancellor further called on general public to support tree planting campaigns to achieve greener Kano in order to safeguard the city against climate change.
