Why the future belongs not to those who adopt AI first, but to those who align people, skills and technology best.

Every technological revolution rewrites the relationship between people and work. The steam engine mechanised labour and accelerated industrial production. Electricity transformed factories and extended economic activity beyond daylight hours. The internet collapsed geographical barriers, connected global markets and fundamentally changed how information is created and exchanged. Today, artificial intelligence is reshaping knowledge work with a speed and scale unlike anything we have experienced before.

As with every major technological shift, the predictions have been dramatic. We are told that artificial intelligence will replace millions of workers, render entire professions obsolete and fundamentally redefine employment. Such concerns are understandable. AI is already drafting legal documents, writing software, diagnosing diseases, analysing financial markets and generating content in seconds that once required hours of human effort. Yet amid the growing fascination with what artificial intelligence can do, we may be asking the wrong question.

The defining challenge of the AI era is not whether technology will change work – it already is. The more important question is whether our workforce will evolve quickly enough to remain relevant. This distinction matters because history tells us something remarkably consistent. Technology has rarely eliminated opportunity altogether. Instead, it has redistributed opportunity towards those who adapted. Every industrial revolution has rewarded learning more than familiarity, adaptability more than routine, and continuous improvement more than accumulated experience. Artificial intelligence will be no different.

The future of work is therefore not fundamentally a race between humans and machines. It is a race between the pace of technological change and the pace at which human capability can remain aligned with it. That is why I believe the conversation surrounding artificial intelligence requires a different lens.

Technology changes work. Skills alignment determines value. This simple distinction changes the entire debate. Instead of asking whether AI will replace workers, we should be asking whether workers possess the capabilities required to perform work that AI is transforming. Responsibility shifts from algorithms to people, from software to strategy and from technological innovation to workforce preparedness.

The evidence increasingly supports this perspective. The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 estimates that nearly 39 per cent of workers’ core skills will change by 2030 and identifies skills gaps – not artificial intelligence – as the single greatest barrier organisations expect to face in business transformation. Meanwhile, studies by McKinsey suggest that generative AI could automate activities that consume up to 30 per cent of working hours in advanced economies by the end of this decade, not by eliminating entire occupations but by reshaping the tasks within them. Together, these findings point to a deeper reality. Work is changing faster than workforce capability.

To appreciate why this matters, it helps to distinguish between work and the workforce. Work consists of the tasks through which value is created. Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing those tasks. Software developers increasingly collaborate with AI-assisted coding tools. Lawyers review AI-generated first drafts instead of writing every document from scratch. Doctors employ intelligent systems to support diagnosis. Marketing professionals rely on predictive algorithms to understand customer behaviour. Teachers are beginning to personalise learning with generative AI. Across virtually every profession, the work itself is evolving.

The workforce, however, consists of the people expected to perform that work. Unlike technology, people do not acquire new capabilities overnight. Universities cannot redesign curricula every month. Organisations cannot instantly reskill thousands of employees. Professional habits, institutional cultures and educational systems evolve far more slowly than software. As a result, the distance between changing work and workforce capability continues to widen. It is within that widening gap – not within artificial intelligence itself – that relevance is either preserved or lost.

Artificial intelligence is often portrayed as a tidal wave threatening to overwhelm workers. A more useful analogy may be a river changing course. The water continues to flow, but the channels through which it flows are different. Those who insist on standing in yesterday’s riverbed will eventually find themselves stranded. Those who learn to navigate the new current will continue moving forward. Technology rarely makes people irrelevant. Misalignment does.

This is why skills alignment deserves far greater attention than it currently receives. Skills alignment is not simply about attending more training programmes or accumulating additional certifications. It is about ensuring that the capabilities people develop remain closely connected to the capabilities organisations require – not only today but tomorrow. An employee may complete dozens of professional development courses yet remain poorly prepared for emerging business challenges if those courses bear little relationship to changing organisational priorities. Likewise, a graduate may leave university with impressive academic credentials but struggle to secure meaningful employment because classroom learning no longer reflects workplace realities. The issue is not always a shortage of education. More often, it is a shortage of alignment.

For business leaders, this should fundamentally reshape how artificial intelligence is viewed. AI is not merely another technology investment; it is an organisational transformation challenge. Purchasing sophisticated AI platforms may improve operational efficiency, but sustainable competitive advantage will increasingly belong to organisations capable of continuously identifying emerging skill requirements, redesigning roles, investing in reskilling, encouraging lifelong learning and aligning workforce capability with business strategy. The organisations that will lead in the AI era are unlikely to be those possessing the most advanced algorithms alone. They will be those that develop the most adaptable people.

The implications for individuals are equally profound. The future belongs neither to those who fear artificial intelligence nor to those who embrace it uncritically. It belongs to those who commit themselves to continuous learning. Throughout history, technological progress has consistently rewarded adaptability more than expertise. Professionals who combine technical competence with critical thinking, creativity, ethical judgement, communication and emotional intelligence will continue to create value because these capabilities complement intelligent technologies rather than compete with them.

For Nigeria, this discussion carries particular urgency. Nigeria’s employment challenge did not begin with artificial intelligence. It began decades earlier, when the pace of curriculum reform, workforce planning and organisational learning gradually fell behind the pace of economic change. Long before ChatGPT entered public consciousness, employers routinely complained that graduates lacked workplace-ready competencies, while graduates struggled to secure meaningful employment despite increasing educational attainment. Artificial intelligence did not create this reality. It simply made it impossible to ignore.

That reality presents both a warning and an opportunity. If educational institutions continue producing graduates whose capabilities bear insufficient relationship to evolving industry needs, and if organisations continue treating workforce development as a periodic training exercise rather than a strategic investment, artificial intelligence will merely accelerate existing inefficiencies. Conversely, if Nigeria succeeds in strengthening collaboration between education and industry, embedding lifelong learning into organisational culture and treating workforce capability as a national competitive asset, AI could become one of the greatest catalysts for productivity, innovation and inclusive economic growth in our history.

The responsibility therefore belongs to all of us. Governments must encourage stronger partnerships between education and industry so that policy keeps pace with economic transformation. Universities must increasingly evaluate success not only by graduation rates but also by graduate readiness. Organisations must recognise workforce capability as a strategic asset deserving the same attention as financial capital and technological infrastructure. Individuals must embrace continuous learning not as an occasional career enhancement but as a professional obligation in an economy where change has become the only constant.

There is an African proverb that says, “When the rhythm of the drum changes, the dance must also change.” Artificial intelligence has changed the rhythm of work. The question is no longer whether organisations and workers hear the new beat. They do. The question is whether they are willing to change the dance.

History rarely remembers the societies that possessed the most advanced technologies. It remembers those that learned to harness them. Artificial intelligence will undoubtedly continue to transform work, but whether it becomes a force for shared prosperity or a catalyst for widening inequality will depend less on the sophistication of our algorithms than on the quality of our decisions about education, workforce development and organisational capability. Technology will continue to evolve. The enduring question is whether we will evolve with it.
