American singer Akon’s wife, Tomeka Thaim, has filed for divorce, just days before their 29th wedding anniversary.

According to court documents obtained by People magazine, Tomeka filed the petition on September 11, 2025, citing irreconcilable differences.

She listed their official date of separation as “to be determined.”

Tomeka is seeking joint legal custody of the couple’s 17-year-old daughter, Journey, while requesting physical custody, leaving Akon with visitation rights.

She is also asking for spousal support but has requested that the court not award any support to the 52-year-old musician.

Akon, best known for hits like Smack That and Lonely, has been outspoken about his views on polygamy.

In a 2022 appearance on The Zeze Mills Show, Akon said: “Polygamy is part of our culture. Absolutely.

“For me, it looks normal because it’s culture for us. We didn’t go outside of our African culture when we got to the Western world.

“The flaw the Western world made is they created all these rules without putting nature into account.”

The singer, who has fathered nine children, has often stressed that his role as a father is to provide for his family and guide his children into becoming responsible adults.

Akon added: “My job ain’t to be doing all that extra stuff and these holidays and recitals.

“While I’m taking care of my responsibility to make sure the family has a roof over their head and food, if I have the time to do that and show love, yes, I will do that.

“Communication allows me to be there every day. That’s what my FaceTime phone is for.”

Singer Amirror, who previously claimed to be one of Akon’s four wives, has said that the arrangement works for them.

“We all have different households, we all have different lifestyles,” she explained in a 2023 interview.

“We don’t have to see each other, so we don’t have to be cool with each other. Akon is the type of man where it’s not manipulation – it’s just, if you’re okay with it, you stay. This is our culture.”

Neither Akon nor Tomeka has publicly commented on the divorce filing.
