Akpabio speaks on sexual harassment allegation as Natasha submits petition

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has denied allegations of sexual harassment made against him by the senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

The clash between Akpabio and Akpoti-Uduaghan started over a recent seat re-arrangement in the Senate.

Akpoti-Uduaghan rejected her new seat position after the re-arrangement, saying the move was an attempt to silence her.

The senator later accused Akpabio of making sexual advances towards her in his office and residence in Akwa Ibom State.

Speaking on the allegations at the Senate’s plenary in Abuja on Wednesday, March 5, 2015, Akpabio said: “At no time did I ever harass any woman.

“I was raised very well by my late single mother and I have always upheld respect for women. I was even awarded the most gender-friendly governor in Nigeria.”

Court restrains Senate from probing Senator Natasha

Akpabio, who served as Akwa Ibom State Governor between 2007 and 2015, disclosed that he had been receiving calls about the allegations since February 25 and was aware of the discussions on social media.

The Senate President, however, urged Nigerians and the media to avoid making conclusions, saying they should wait for the court’s decision.

Shortly after Akpabio’s comments, Akpoti-Uduaghan raised a petition under Order 40, accusing the former governor of sexual harassment and abuse of office.

The senator asked to officially submit the petition to the Senate.

The Senate, thereafter, referred the petition to the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct for further investigation.
