Akume denies interest in APC chairmanship

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has dismissed reports linking him to the race for the national chairmanship of the All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting he has no interest in the position.

Speculation had mounted following the resignation of Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje as APC national chairman, with Akume’s name being floated as a possible replacement. However, in a statement issued on Thursday by his media aide, Yomi Odunuga, the SGF described the reports as baseless and untrue.

“I am not jostling for the post of APC national chairman or any other position in the party,” Akume declared, adding that his focus remains squarely on delivering President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and upholding the responsibilities entrusted to him.

“My main concern is not to betray the trust reposed in me by the president. I am committed to the mandate and will not be distracted by political speculations,” he said.

While acknowledging that there are capable individuals from the North-Central zone who could fill the role if zoned there, Akume made it clear that his current priority is national development—not internal party politics.

“I am not in a hurry to abandon the responsibility given to me by the president. Everything I’ve achieved in life is through God’s grace and the support of visionary leaders like President Tinubu,” he added.

He reiterated that rumours of his interest in the APC chairmanship are unfounded, stating, “We are focused on fulfilling the promises made to Nigerians under the leadership of President Tinubu. That is where my energy and commitment lie.”
