Algeria has reportedly deployed military personnel to Niger to provide security for fuel tankers transporting petroleum products from Algeria, amid growing security cooperation between the neighbouring countries.
A large contingent of Algerian armed forces reportedly arrived in Agadez during the night of October 31, 2026, where they were received by the country’s consul.
The deployment followed the reported arrival of other Algerian military units in Arlit, where they were expected to escort fuel convoys moving from Algeria into Niger.
The successive deployments reportedly came after Algeria’s parliament approved the deployment of troops to Niger to protect the country’s interests.
However, details of the operation, including the number of personnel deployed and the precise scope of their mandate, remain unclear.
The development comes as Niger faces persistent security threats from terrorist organisations and armed groups operating across the Sahel, particularly along its borders with Mali, Burkina Faso and Nigeria.
Algeria shares a long border with Niger and has strategic interests in the country’s security and energy sector. The reported deployment highlights growing cooperation between the two countries on border security and the protection of critical supply routes.
