Anambra bans unauthorised speed bumps on public roads

The Anambra State Government has prohibited residents and communities from constructing speed bumps on public roads without prior approval, warning that offenders will face sanctions.

The directive was announced in a statement issued on Saturday by the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, who said the move was prompted by the growing indiscriminate installation of speed bumps across the state.

According to the government, all speed bumps and their locations must now receive official approval, while their design must conform to standards provided by the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure.

The government stated that speed bumps would only be permitted in critical areas such as markets, schools, churches and other locations approved by the state.

It noted that the uncontrolled construction of speed bumps has damaged road infrastructure and created safety concerns, making stricter regulation necessary.

The government warned that erecting speed bumps without authorisation or outside approved locations is now an offence and urged residents and communities to comply with the directive.

It advised members of the public seeking clarification to contact the Office of the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure.
