The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has submitted the name of the former governor of Borno State, Sen. Kashim Shettima, to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the party’s vice-presidential candidate for the 2023 presidential election.
It was gathered that the name of Shettima was submitted to INEC on Thursday by the APC National Chairman, Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, and the National Secretary, Senator Iyiola Omisore, in accordance with the party’s constitution.
The development came 24 hours ahead of the expiration of the deadline issued by INEC for political parties to substitute their candidates for the presidential and National Assembly elections.
It would be recalled that the APC presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, earlier nominated one of the party’s chieftains in Katsina State, Kabiru Masari, as a surrogate running mate or placeholder in order to beat the June 17 INEC deadline.
Tinubu later picked Shettima as his running for the 2023 general election.

The submission of Shettima’s name was scheduled to be followed by his unveiling at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja on Thursday.
The unveiling was however suspended till next week at the instance of the APC National chairman.
The stakeholders of the Borno State chapter of the APC have however endorsed the incumbent Commissioner for Justice in the state, Kaka Shehu, to replace Shettima as the senator for Borno Central senatorial district.
Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, made the disclosure at the end of the stakeholders’ meeting on Thursday in Maiduguri.
Zulum described the choice of Shehu as destined by God, adding: “Shehu is a real party man and deserved support of its members.”
