APC wins 20 LGAs, PDP secures 3 in Rivers LG polls

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has won 20 Local Government Areas in Saturday’s council elections in Rivers State.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) claimed only three LGAs in Rivers State.

APC also won the councillorship election in 20 LGAs, while the PDP claimed only three councils.

The Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Dr. Michael Odey, announced the winners of the local government elections at the Commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt, the state capital, on Sunday, August 31, 2025.

This is the first time the APC would gain dominance in Rivers since the return of democracy in 1999.

Wike hints at Fubara’s return, says Rivers emergency rule expires September 18

Only the APC and the PDP participated in the chairmanship or councillorship contests.

The list of winners released by RSIEC shows that some of the elected chairmen are returning for a second term, having previously served under the administration of former Governor Nyesom Wike.

The suspended governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, lost his Opobo-Nkoro LGA to the APC.

Fubara and his supporters were absent during the elections on Saturday.
