APC’s Okpebholo wins Edo governorship election

The All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate in Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has been declared the winner of Saturday’s governorship election in the state.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) returning officer, Prof. Faruk Kuta, declared Okpebholo as the winner of the governorship election while announcing the results in Benin, the Edo State capital, on Sunday, September 22, 2024.

Okpebholo won the election with 291,667 votes to defeat his closest rival, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 247,274 votes.

The Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate, Olumide Akpata, came a distant third with 22,361 votes.

“That Okpebholo Monday of APC having satisfied the requirement of the law is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected,” INEC’s returning officer said.

INEC had cleared 17 parties for the Edo governorship election as candidates battle to take over the reins of leadership from incumbent Governor Godwin Obaseki, whose tenure ends in November 2024.

The gubernatorial election took place in 4,519 polling units across the 18 Local Government Areas of Edo State.
