Argentina edge Switzerland after extra-time thriller to book World Cup semi-final spot

Argentina kept alive their dream of retaining the FIFA World Cup title after defeating Switzerland 3-1 in extra time to reach the semi-finals of the 2026 tournament.

Lionel Scaloni’s side made an impressive start at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, taking the lead in the 10th minute through Alexis Mac Allister, who converted a fine assist from captain Lionel Messi.

The early goal sparked wild celebrations among the large contingent of Argentine supporters in attendance.

Switzerland responded strongly after the break and drew level midway through the second half when Dan Ndoye found the back of the net, setting up a tense finale.

The contest took another dramatic turn when Breel Embolo was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for simulation, reducing Switzerland to 10 men.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, the Swiss produced a determined defensive display to push the match into extra time.

Argentina eventually found the breakthrough in the 112th minute as Julian Alvarez curled a magnificent strike into the top corner, leaving the Swiss goalkeeper with no chance.

Lautaro Martínez then wrapped up the victory with a late goal to send the defending champions into the last four.

The victory extends Argentina’s unbeaten run at the World Cup to 12 matches and moves them a step closer to becoming the first team since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the global title.

Argentina will now face England in a blockbuster semi-final in Atlanta after the Three Lions secured a 2-1 victory over Norway to book their place in the final four.
