Army debunks sabotage claims, reveals details on soldier’s death in Katsina

The Nigerian Army’s 17 Brigade in Katsina State has dismissed reports alleging internal sabotage and negligence in the death of Corporal Ude Jude, describing the claims as misleading and inaccurate.

The Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the brigade, Captain Abayomi Adisa, in a statement issued on Sunday, April 12, 2026, said viral reports surrounding the soldier’s death were deliberately crafted to misinform the public.

Adisa explained that the deceased was not a lieutenant as widely circulated, but a corporal who joined the Nigerian Army in 2012 under the 67 Regular Recruit Intake.

Adisa said Jude sustained injuries outside the barracks while serving at a Forward Operating Base in Funtua, contrary to claims that the incident occurred within the military facility.

He explained that on February 16, at about 8:30 p.m., the soldier, who hailed from Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State, left his duty post to purchase personal items when he was attacked.

The brigade spokesman said preliminary findings later revealed that the attack stemmed from a physical confrontation between the soldier and a civilian over a personal dispute.

Adisa noted that Jude received immediate first aid before being evacuated to the 17 Brigade Medical Centre, where he underwent sustained medical treatment.

Adisa said: “He was subsequently relieved of duty to enable full recovery, as medical reports indicated that he suffered stab wounds and other trauma consistent with a violent encounter.

“In spite of weeks of treatment and clinical monitoring, tragedy struck on March 24, 2026, when he collapsed outside his residence shortly after receiving medical care.

“Jude was rushed back to the Medical Centre but was confirmed dead on arrival.”

He added that the Garrison Commander personally supervised key burial arrangements, including the provision of a coffin and mortuary services, while additional support came from the 82 Division Garrison in Enugu.

Adisa further stated that all military belongings of the deceased were handed over to his next of kin in accordance with standard procedures, while the family was kept informed throughout the period. Security support was also provided during the burial.

Adisa explained that the delay in issuing an official statement was due to the need to verify facts and consult relevant military formations to ensure accuracy.

He added that efforts were ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack, assuring that justice would be served.
