Assault: Suspended Ogun monarch remanded in prison

The suspended traditional ruler of Orile Ifo, Oba Abdulsemiu Ogunjobi, has been remanded at the Ilaro Correctional Centre in Ogun State after failing to meet his bail conditions.

The spokesperson for the correctional facility, Yinka Odukoya, confirmed the development on Wednesday, February 5, 2025.

Odukoya said the embattled monarch remains in custody as he has yet to fulfil the requirements for his bail.

“Yes, he is in our custody, which means he has been unable to meet the bail conditions granted by the court yesterday. However, as soon as he does, he will be released,” Odukoya told Punch.

The Ogun State Police Command had, on Tuesday, February 4, arraigned Ogunjobi before the Magistrates’ Court sitting in the Ifo area of the state for assaulting a 73-year-old man, Abraham Areola.

The monarch was arraigned on a three-count charge of conspiracy, assault, and conduct likely to cause breach of peace.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Olumide Awoleke, told the court that the traditional committed the offences at about 11: 00 a.m. at Sojuolu Street, Ifo, on January 21.

Awoleke said Ogunjobi was seen in a viral video assaulting the 73-year-old victim, which led to his arrest.

According to the prosecutor, the monarch unlawfully assaulted Areola by slapping him on his face and ear.

He added that the monarch, a retired police officer, conspired to commit misdemeanours to wit: assault and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.

The offences, the prosecutor said, contravened Sections 517, 351, and 249 of the Criminal Code of Laws of Ogun State of Nigeria, 2006.

The Magistrate, F. A. Iroko, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N5 million with two sureties in like sum, who must be residents within the court jurisdiction.

Iroko, thereafter, adjourned the case was till March 6, 2025, for hearing.
