ASUU continues strike at Yobe varsity over unmet demands

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Yobe State University (YSU) chapter, has reaffirmed that its ongoing strike has not been suspended, citing the state government’s failure to fulfill key promises.

In a statement released on Sunday, ASUU-YSU Chairperson, Comrade Ahmed Ibrahim Karage, said academic staff remain on strike and will not participate in either physical or online teaching activities.

“This is to inform the general public that the strike embarked upon by ASUU-YSU has not been called off,” Karage stated. “Efforts are ongoing to resolve the outstanding issues with the government.”

While the union acknowledged the recent implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage adjustment in July, it stressed that several critical demands remain unaddressed.

These include the implementation of staff promotions approved by the university council, payment of promotion arrears from 2018 to 2025.

Payment of arrears from the 2019–2024 minimum wage adjustment, disbursement of the 35–25% salary award for 2023 to 2025 and payment of minimum wage arrears from January 2024 to June 2025.

Karage emphasized that the strike is a collective effort to push for better working conditions, improved funding for teaching and research, and enhanced staff welfare.

He assured that the strike would be called off once a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is signed between ASUU and the Yobe State Government.
