The management of the University of Ibadan (UI), Oyo State, has closed down the institution over the extended industrial action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Also, authorities of the Bayero University Kano (BUK) have directed all students residing in its campuses to vacate their hostels on or before March 20 for their own security.

The Registrar of the institution, Mrs. Olubunmi Faluyi, made this known via a special bulletin addressed to the students on Thursday.

The UI Registrar, in the bulletin, ordered the students of the university to vacate their halls of residence with immediate effect.

Faluyi stated: “Management, at its meeting on Wednesday, March 16, 2022, deliberated on the ongoing industrial action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which had now been extended by eight (8) weeks.

“As a result, academic activities in the university have become paralysed.

“Consequently, the Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of the Senate, has directed that the university be closed until further notice.”

She added that post-graduate students, who have paid their school fees and undergraduate students who are on industrial attachment or practical training, are exempted from this vacation notice.

“Such students are to visit the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs for accommodation arrangement.

“A new date of resumption will be communicated in due course.

“Management wishes our students a safe journey to their various destinations,” Faluyi noted

Meanwhile, BUK’s Information and Publication Secretary, Mr. Bala Abdullahi,

said that the decision followed the extension of the ongoing warning strike by ASUU by another two months.

“The meeting of the principal officers of the university held on March 14 directed that all students residing in the campuses vacate the hostels.

“The students should equally note that the management will as from the said date, suspend the provision of all municipal services in the hostels.

“That is, in order to forestall any unforeseen act of criminality, as well as, its attendant consequences,” he said.

Abdullahi also said that the management had also suspended the students’ on-campus job scheme until the resumption of full academic activities.

It would be recalled that ASUU, on Monday, March 14, 2022, extended its industrial action by eight weeks, citing inability of the Federal Government to meet its demand.
