Nigerian comedian and actor Ayodeji Makun, popularly known as AY, has shared an old Instagram message from Afrobeats singer Asake, revealing that the artiste sought his support in 2019, years before rising to international prominence.
AY made the revelation after attending Asake’s sold-out concert at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, where the singer performed as part of his “In God We Trust” tour.
In a video posted on Instagram on Monday, the comedian reflected on Asake’s transformation from an upcoming musician seeking exposure to a global Afrobeats star.
AY said he had received a direct message from Asake in 2019 but did not see it when it was sent.
“I remember when this boy sent me a message in my DM on Instagram. I didn’t even get to see this message on time. This was years ago, sometime during 2019,” he said.
The message showed Asake introducing himself as “Ololade” and asking AY to listen to and support his music.
“Good Evening sir. I’m OLOLADE. How are you doing sir? I’m here for help, KING AY. I just drop a record titled – African Something. You vibing to the song is a lot to my career,” Asake wrote.
He ended the appeal by asking the comedian to support his budding career, writing, “KING AY, Help a son sir. May God bless you and your family. I love you KING AY.”
AY, however, stressed that he was not sharing the exchange to claim any role in Asake’s success.
“I’m not saying all of this to take any credit. That glory belongs to God and his talent and of course the hard work that is put into all of this,” he said.
The comedian said watching Asake perform before a packed Houston audience brought the singer’s journey into perspective and reminded him of how dramatically circumstances can change.
AY used the experience to encourage people not to dismiss those seeking opportunities, noting that today’s unknown talent could become tomorrow’s celebrated figure.
“The truth is that the person asking to be seen today may become the person the whole world will celebrate tomorrow. So be good to people, respect their dreams, never look down on anyone because you simply cannot tell what tomorrow brings,” he said.
After the concert, AY said Asake’s management invited him backstage, where the singer personally came to greet him.
The comedian praised the artiste’s humility and performance, describing the concert as evidence of his remarkable growth.
“Ah Asake, you were simply phenomenal,” AY said.
He congratulated the singer on his achievements, adding, “Nigeria celebrates you, Africa celebrates you and the world is seeing all your doings and workings right now.”
