The Federal Government has released N38.93bn to 166 public tertiary institutions, with universities set to receive N28.5bn, representing about 73 per cent of the total allocation.

The intervention under the Needs Assessment Revitalisation Fund covers 79 universities, 46 polytechnics and 41 colleges of education, targeting infrastructure deficits and improvements in teaching and learning facilities.

The Federal Ministry of Finance disclosed this in a statement on Sunday by its Head of Media, Efe Ovuakporie.

According to the ministry, polytechnics will receive N5.8bn, while colleges of education have been allocated N4.7bn.

The allocation breakdown shows that universities received the largest share of the fund, followed by polytechnics and colleges of education.

The ministry said the disbursement was intended to address longstanding infrastructure challenges in public tertiary institutions and support the implementation of agreements reached between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

“The intervention forms part of the Federal Government’s efforts to address the needs of public universities and support the implementation of agreed measures under the Memorandum of Understanding between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities,” the statement said.

The Needs Assessment Revitalisation Fund is designed to finance infrastructure improvements and other identified needs in public tertiary institutions, where inadequate facilities have remained a recurring concern.

The ministry said the released funds would enable beneficiary institutions to commence new projects or continue previously approved interventions aimed at improving their operational capacity.

It added that coordination among the Federal Ministry of Finance, Federal Ministry of Education and beneficiary institutions would be necessary to ensure the funds deliver measurable improvements in infrastructure and learning conditions.

The government said the overall objective was to strengthen institutional capacity and improve the quality of tertiary education across the country.
