Bala Mohammed flags off 2025 tree planting campaign in Bauchi

In a bold stride toward environmental protection and climate action, Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, on Wednesday, officially flagged off the state’s annual Tree Planting Campaign in Dass Local Government Area.

The event, which attracted government officials, traditional rulers, PDP leaders, environmentalists, farmers, and enthusiastic members of the Dass community, marked another key milestone in the state’s Green Bauchi Agenda—a policy framework designed to combat desertification, deforestation, erosion, and other environmental challenges.

Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Bala described the campaign as more than just a ceremonial activity, but a deliberate policy response to the threats posed by climate change.

“Today, as we plant these trees, we are planting hope, resilience, and a sustainable future,” he declared.

“It is our collective duty to protect and preserve our environment against the growing threats of climate change and ecological imbalance.”

Highlighting the multifaceted benefits of tree planting, the governor noted its role in halting desert encroachment, preventing gully erosion, improving soil fertility, and supporting agricultural productivity.

He emphasized the importance of local involvement, especially by women and youth, and urged all local government councils to replicate the exercise in their areas while ensuring proper monitoring and maintenance.

In his remarks, the Hon. Commissioner for Housing and Environment, Hon. Danlami Ahmed Kawule, added that trees not only help in maintaining ecological balance but also improve the beauty of urban and rural areas, creating natural habitats and enhancing the quality of life.

Chairman of Dass Local Government, Comrade Mohammed Jibo, praised the governor for his unwavering commitment to fighting desertification and promoting green development across the state.

The highlight of the day was the symbolic planting of tree seedlings by Governor Bala, top government functionaries, and the Emir of Dass, underscoring the collective spirit behind the initiative.

Prominent indigenes of Dass, in their separate messages, called on residents to support the state government’s environmental initiatives, stressing the importance of community-driven solutions and awareness campaigns to reinforce sustainable practices.

This year’s campaign aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land), reinforcing Bauchi State’s commitment to global efforts in mitigating climate change and restoring degraded ecosystems.
