Gunmen suspected to be bandits have abducted two residents of the Nigerian Army Post Housing Scheme in the Kurudu area of Abuja.

It was gathered that the bandits abducted the wife and one of the in-laws of a lawyer, Cyril Adikwu, during an attack on the estate on Thursday night.

A neighbour of the victims, Austine John, disclosed to journalists on Friday that the gunmen stormed the Phase 2 area of the estate at about 10:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 18, shot sporadically, and abducted the two victims.

John added that Adikwu managed to escape during the attack.

The resident said: “It all started at about 10:00 p.m. We suddenly started hearing gunshots, and immediately we knew something was wrong. I quickly went out to make sure my gate was well locked.

“Then we heard the gunshot in the lawyer’s house, and then we alerted the estate’s management, who immediately swung into action.

“In a short time, soldiers came around and started shooting too. But before they came, the kidnappers had taken the wife and one of the in-laws of the barrister.

“This is really traumatising because we could not sleep throughout the night due to fear of the kidnappers coming back. President Tinubu should please help Nigerians put an end to this barbaric act by the kidnappers.”

There has been a spike in the abduction and killing of residents by bandits, especially in Kuje and Bwari Area Councils of Abuja.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, said the FCT Administration was taking steps to address security challenges affecting some areas of the nation’s capital.

Wike said this while addressing journalists before a close-door emergency meeting with security agencies and other critical stakeholders in Abuja on Tuesday, January 16.

The minister, who acknowledged the challenges, urged residents not to panic, saying the government has taken measures to address the situation.
