Bandits kill DCO, raze police station in Zamfara

Gunmen suspected to be bandits have killed the Divisional Crime Officer (DCO) in charge of Zurmi Divisional Police in Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

The bandits also razed the police station.

Confirming the incident via a statement issued on Monday, February 19, 2024, the Zamfara State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Yazid Abubakar, said the bandits wielding sophisticated weapons attacked the police station on Sunday, February 18.

Abubakar said the policemen on duty retaliated and repelled the attack in a gun duel which led to the death of many bandits while some took to their heels with gunshot wounds.

He, however, said in the cause of the gun battle with the bandits, the DCO, DSP Shitu Musa, was killed and two other police officers suffered gunshot wounds.

The police spokesman said while the bandits were retreating, they burnt down some houses and shops in the same area, including the police station.

Abubakar added that the Zamfara State Commissioner of Police, Shehu Dalijan, has deployed police personnel to the area, reassuring the people of the state that the command under his leadership will continue to do its best to protect lives and properties.

Dalijan further urged the people of the state to furnish the command with credible and timely information on the activities of criminals to salvage the state from all forms of criminalities.
