Banker seeks divorce over wife’s inflation of commodities’ prices

A banker, Biliameen Oyesola, has told a Mapo Grade A Customary Court sitting in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, to dissolve his six-year-old union to his estranged wife, Rofiat, on ground of alleged constant inflation of commodities bought for his household.

Oyesola, a father of two who works at a new generation bank, told the court that his wife regularly moved to her mother’s house anytime she inflated prices of good she bought for the family.

The banker said: “Anytime I gave Rofiat money to buy any household commodity for the family, she would inflate the price, with the connivance of her mother, in order to inflict untold hardship on me by paying heavily.

“When I became aware of her actions, I told her to start producing receipts of anything she bought but she could not.

“After giving birth to our last child, Rofiat and her mother inflated the cost of her post-natal drugs that were prescribed in my absence.

“I told them to show me the receipts, but they were unable to do so and so I decided not to pay.

“As if that was not enough, Rofiat frequently abandoned my house for her mother’s, despite my warning.

“She and her mother believed that they could punish me by encouraging her to leave me at any given time.

“Many people, including our Imam, have intervened but she has refused to turn a new leaf.

“In fact, Rofiat and her mother are doing everything possible to prevent me from marrying another wife; whereas they are not allowing me to enjoy my marriage.”

The petitioner prayed the court to grant him custody of the two children produced by the union.

The respondent was, however, absent at the hearing, despite being served by the court bailiff.

The Court President, S.M. Akintayo, adjourned the matter till August 10, 2023, for commencement of defence.

Akintayo, however, re-ordered the bailiff to ensure service of hearing on Rofiat.
