The Bauchi State House of Assembly has urged the state government to establish more dialysis centres that will attend to patients at subsidised rates.
Mr. Yusuf Bako, member representing Pali constituency in Alkaleri Local Government Area, made the call at a plenary on Tuesday in Bauchi.
He called on the state government to establish two additional dialysis centres in the Northern and Central senatorial districts of the state, to increase access to services and alleviate pains of people suffering from kidney ailments, as there is only one centre in the state which is at the specialist hospital, Bauchi.
He noted that the treatment through dialysis is expensive and that there are numerous and increasing cases of kidney cases that need treatment with dialysis machines.
“That is why we are appealing to the state government to establish more centres for the citizens,” he said.
Bako also urged Government and relevant agencies to increase awareness campaigns in the media on prevalence of dialysis diseases among the citizens.
The dialysis centre is a place where a procedure is done to remove waste products and excess fluid from the blood when the kidney stops working properly. Blood is therefore diverted to a machine to be cleaned.
After much deliberations by members, including the Speaker, Abubakar Sulaiman, the lawmakers unanimously voted for the establishment of more dialysis centres considering the magnitude of related ailments.
The House also agreed that the government should subsidise dialysis treatment for citizens of the state.
The speaker directed the clerk of the house to transmit the message to the state government for action.
