Bauchi stampede death toll rises to 7

The death toll in the alms distribution stampede in Bauchi State has increased to seven.

The Bauchi State Police Command made this known in a statement issued by its spokesperson, SP Ahmed Wakil, on Monday, March 25, 2024.

No fewer than four persons were earlier confirmed dead in a stampede at the distribution of alms by a philanthropist, Yakubu Maishanu, in Bauchi, the capital of Bauchi State.

The Bauchi State Police Public Relations Officer disclosed that the incident occurred at the AYM Shafa Holdings Office when hundreds of people gathered to collect alms from Maishanu on Sunday, March 24.

Wakil said the command received a distress call from the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi about the victims being rushed to the facility for medical attention.

He added that four females were confirmed dead by a medical doctor while others were receiving treatment at the hospital.

However, the police spokesman, on Monday, said three more women died.

Wakil noted: “The Medical Doctor at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital confirmed that two more women died at the hospital among those brought for treatment.

“The other woman was conveyed home by her family, but she died at home.

“More details will be made available to the public as the command receives them.”
