Blasphemy: Kano cleric sacks lawyers, to defend self

A Kano-based controversial cleric, Sheikh Abduljabbar Nasiru Kabara, has sacked his legal team in his ongoing trial for blasphemy before a Kano Upper Shariah Court.

Sheikh Kabara is standing trial before the court for his controversial and blasphemous preaching on the personality and traditions of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

With this development, the cleric has sacked three different legal teams in the case that started last year.

He asked the court to allow him to stand in for himself in the trial because he alleged that his lawyers often get threats to their lives.

Government lawyers, however, countered the cleric and urged the court to get counsel for the Sheikh from Legal Aid Council.

Justice Ibrahim Sarki Yola granted that Legal Aid Council provides legal team to the scholar and adjourned the case till 26th May.
