Bleak Sallah for 10,000 Kano workers as gov stops salaries

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has ordered the suspension of salaries of 10,000 workers in the state.

For the 10,000 civil servants, this year Sallah will not be pleasant for them as there won’t be money to celebrate with their families

The Accountant General of Kano State, Abdulkadir Abdulsalam, who made this known while speaking on a local Radio talk show in Kano on Monday, said the affected civil servants were employed by the immediate past governor, Abdullahi Ganduje’s administration.

Abdulsalam disclosed that a committee has been set up to investigate their engagement into the civil service, saying the outcome of the findings would play a role in their fate.

The Accountant General also announced the suspension of transfers made by the previous government within the civil service against existing rules, adding that status quo payment should be maintained by the affected government officials

He, however, expressed the readiness of the new administration to pay workers salary by 25th of every month, saying pension and gratuity would also be paid to retired workers.

The state Commissioner for Information, Baba Dantiye, told The Star that the measure was to ensure the right people are paid.

“The fear is to pay money to wrong people. Government is suspecting there employment did not comply with the rules so there has to be investigation.

‘Those found properly employed will get there money. So it’s not about sallah it’s about doing the right thing,” Dantiye told The Star.
