Boniface dropped from Super Eagles squad for World Cup qualifiers

Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface has been dropped from the Super Eagles squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa.

The final 23-man squad for the World Cup qualifiers was released by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Friday.

Boniface’s proposed move to AC Milan recently collapsed after the Serie A side conducted four different medical tests and became concerned about his injury history. Milan had agreed terms with Leverkusen, including a €5 million loan fee and a €24 million option to buy, but ultimately pulled out of the deal.

Speaking on the failed transfer, Boniface, who has suffered two anterior cruciate ligament tears during his career, confirmed that his past injuries were central to Milan’s decision.

However, Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong and striker Victor Osimhen were included in the team’s squad.

The list also includes midfielders Alex Iwobi, Raphael Onyedika, and Wilfred Ndidi.

Among the forwards are Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, Cyriel Dessers, and Moses Simon.

Super Eagles will face Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo, in a Matchday 7 fixture on September 6.

They will then travel to Bloemfontein to face South Africa on September 9.
