Breaking: Gunmen kill two Ekiti monarchs, attack another

Gunmen have killed the Onimojo of Imojo Ekiti in Oye Local Government Area and Elesun of Esun Ekiti in Ajoni, Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State.

It was gathered that the monarchs were killed by gunmen while returning from a security meeting in Irele-Ekiti on Monday, January 29, 2024.

It was learnt that another traditional ruler, Alara of Ara in Ikole Local Government Area, narrowly escaped when the assailants accosted them between Oke-Ako and Ipao-Ekiti in Ajoni Local Government Area of the state and attempted to abduct them.

Speaking on the incident, the Chairman of Ajoni Local Council Development Area, Micheal Ogungbemi, said the gunmen tried to abduct the three traditional rulers.

Ogungbemi said it was “quite unfortunate that two of the Obas lost their lives during the incident”.

The Ekiti State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Abutu, confirmed the killing, noting that details about the incident were still sketchy.

Abutu said necessary action was ongoing, adding that the tactical and intelligence teams of the command had been deployed to the area of the incident.
