Buhari: Nigerians’ll decide my successor

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that Nigerians will decide his successor as the country prepares for the 2023 general election.

Recall that Buhari, in an exclusive interview with Channels Television in January, said he did not care about the person who would succeed him in 2023.

The President further expressed fear that his favourite presidential candidate might be “eliminated” if he revealed his identity.

He added that he had no special interest in the 2023 presidential election, saying: “It is not my problem.

“I am not interested. I believe that whoever wins the poll should be sworn in as the next leader of Nigeria.”

However, Buhari, while speaking on Monday during the Eid-el-Fitr prayer with the Muslim faithful at the Mambila Barracks Parade Ground in Abuja, restated his administration’s commitment to a free, fair, and credible election.

The President, when asked to speak on who he would like to succeed him in 2023, said: “The person that Nigerians elect.”

Buhari further challenged the heads of military and other security agencies in the country to go after terrorists and eliminate them.

He said his administration was committed to working towards making the country safe for Nigerians.

Other prominent personalities who observed prayers at Mambila Barracks Parade Ground with President Buhari include National Security Adviser, retired Major General Babagana Munguno; Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ahmed Rufai Abubakar; Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba.

Others are former Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazzau, ex-Governor of Adamawa  State, Murtala Nyako; among others.
