CBN sets countdown clock on website for new naira notes

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has set a countdown clock on its website showing the deadline for the soon-to-be redesigned naira notes in circulation.

It would be recalled that CBN announced plans to redesign, produce, release, and circulate new series of three naira notes out of the existing eight banknotes.

These are the N200, N500, and N1,000 denominations which will take effect from December 15, 2022, after its launch by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The CBN had also warned Nigerians of the consequences of mishandling the naira notes.

The CBN added that the new and existing currencies shall remain legal tender and circulated together until January 31, 2023, when the existing money shall cease to be legal tender in Nigeria.

The bank has however set a countdown clock for the naira notes to be redesigned.

The clock was showing 70 days, 12 hours, and 29 minutes as of 11:30 a.m. on Monday.
