Nigerian singer Mr Eazi has claimed that Chelsea once considered signing him before the English Premier League club recruited former Super Eagles midfielder John Obi Mikel in 2006.
The singer made the revelation during an interview with Beat FM, saying he chose to pursue music while Mikel went on to establish himself at the London club.
“They were gonna sign me. So it was like me and Mikel Obi,” Mr Eazi said.
He suggested that he believed music was his stronger path, joking that Mikel lacked the talent to become a musician.
“I just thought that Mikel Obi is not, he doesn’t have talent as a musician. But I can do that. So I let Mikel go to Chelsea,” he said.
Mr Eazi also linked the decision to his approach to the music industry, saying he was comfortable stepping aside to let others enjoy the spotlight while he pursued his own ambitions.

“So with this, with the music too, I had to, like, step back, go make a couple billions and then let other people shine,” he added.
The singer referenced fellow Nigerian artiste Seyi Vibez, whom he jokingly described as a great Nigerian philosopher, while highlighting the message, “Let your brother shine.”
Mikel joined Chelsea in 2006 and spent more than a decade with the club, winning two Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League, among other honours.
Mr Eazi, meanwhile, has built a career in Nigeria’s music industry and internationally, becoming known for his contribution to the growth of Afrobeats.
His claim about Chelsea’s interest in signing him was made during the radio interview; no further details of the alleged approach were provided in the account.
