Clarence Peters reveals why he forgave his father

Renowned Nigerian music video director, Clarence Peters, has opened up about his complex relationship with his father, Afro-juju icon Sir Shina Peters, revealing that he forgave him after recognizing that he had made the same mistakes in his own life.

Speaking on a recent episode of the Afropolitan Podcast, the 41-year-old filmmaker said the turning point came in 2014/2015, when he realized he had mirrored many of his father’s missteps.

However, Clarence credited advancements in technology and the evolution of the industry for cushioning the impact of his own actions.

“I made every single mistake my father made. I’m just lucky that time and tech saved me from it being as catastrophic as his own,” Clarence said.

“The moment I realized that, I forgave him instantly—even before we had a conversation.

“That was when I became an adult and began my journey into adulthood.”

Clarence, the son of music legend Shina Peters and Nollywood actress Clarion Chukwurah, has previously spoken candidly about the emotional toll of growing up with famous parents.

In a February interview, he admitted that their public profiles contributed to childhood trauma.

“I grew up with famous parents, and some of my trauma stemmed from them being in the limelight—I didn’t like that,” he shared.

He also spoke about his struggle with imposter syndrome early in his career, revealing that he initially resisted putting his name on music videos. “A friend I used to edit with tricked me into it.

“He added my name to the credits, and there was nothing I could do,” he said.

Clarence Peters has since emerged as one of Nigeria’s most respected music video directors, known for his visually striking work with top artists across Africa.
