Court orders pregnancy test in divorce dispute

A Shari’a Court sitting in Magajin Gari, Kaduna State, has ordered a pregnancy test for a divorced woman, Khadija Abdurrahman, following a dispute over her claim that she is pregnant for her former husband.

The presiding judge, Malam Mu’awiya Shehu, directed both parties to report to Yusuf Dantsoho General Hospital in Kaduna for the test and return to court with the result on August 11.

The woman’s former husband, businessman Muhammad Auwal, had approached the court seeking confirmation of the pregnancy after what he described as conflicting information from his ex-wife.

Through his counsel, M. Salahuddeen, Auwal told the court that he divorced Abdurrahman in March but later received inconsistent claims regarding her pregnancy.

“She called me with claims that she was pregnant, but later informed me she was not. I want the court to determine whether she is truly pregnant so I can take full responsibility if she is. If she is not, the court should order her to stop disturbing me,” he said.

Responding, Abdurrahman denied repeatedly contacting her former husband.

“I only called him once to inform him about the pregnancy. He also disturbs me with calls,” she told the court.

Justice Shehu subsequently ordered both parties to undergo a pregnancy test at Yusuf Dantsoho General Hospital and adjourned the case until August 11 for the presentation of the medical report.
