Dangote refinery partners Honeywell to expand petrochemical production

Dangote refinery has agreed a deal with Honeywell to deploy advanced technology aimed at expanding petrochemical production at the refinery in Lagos State.

The partnership will see the $20 billion refinery broaden its operations beyond fuel production into petrochemicals used in plastics, detergents, and other industrial materials.

The initiative forms part of Dangote’s broader strategy to develop an integrated petrochemical ecosystem around Africa’s largest refinery and position Nigeria as a regional manufacturing hub.

Dangote refinery said on Monday it will use Honeywell UOP’s Oleflex technology to produce an additional 750,000 metric tons a year of propylene at its Lekki refinery, supporting plastics used in packaging, consumer goods and industrial applications.

The refinery said the propylene will be used in manufacturing plastics for packaging, consumer goods, and industrial applications.

The company will also incorporate Honeywell technology to produce 400,000 tonnes per year of linear alkylbenzene (LAB), a key ingredient in detergents and cleaning products.

Dangote refinery said the LAB facility is expected to rank among the world’s largest once fully operational.

Although financial details of the deal were not disclosed, the move reinforces Dangote’s long-term investment in petrochemical production.

Dangote’s $2 billion petrochemical plant within the Lekki complex – with an 830,000 metric tonne capacity – began producing polypropylene in March 2025, supplying the local market in 25kg bags.

Dangote and Honeywell have maintained a long-standing collaboration on the refinery, which currently has a processing capacity of 650,000 barrels per day.

With continued deployment of Honeywell technology, Dangote aims to increase the refinery’s capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day by 2028 – a development that could make it the world’s largest refinery by throughput.
