Deji Adeyanju: Why I’d vote for Tinubu over Obi in 2027

Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has declared his readiness to vote for President Bola Tinubu over former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election.

Adeyanju said he would pitch his tent with Tinubu if Obi emerges as a presidential candidate of the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the 2027 election.

The lawyer said this on Channels Television’s programme, ‘Morning Brief’, on Friday, August 29, 2025.

He also vowed not to support the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), saying: “God forbid that I support APC.”

Asked whether he was trying to discredit Obi ahead of the 2027 election, Adeyanju said: “If the opposition presents Peter Obi, I will vote for Tinubu.”

Obi and Adeyanju’s feud recently shifted to the courtroom after the former governor, through his legal team, threatened to sue the lawyer over alleged publication of defamatory statements on social media and in interviews.

Adeyanju, however, dismissed the notice, expressing eagerness to face Obi in court.

The lawyer accused the former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate of encouraging an unfriendly political culture, citing the behaviour of some of Obi’s supporters, fondly called “Obidients”, on social media.

He stated: “We cannot have a man who leads a mob that terrorises people online and cannot tolerate criticism, who calls people all sorts of names.

“Anybody who cannot support their candidate is seen as an enemy of Nigeria or has been paid to do so. That is not democracy.”

Adeyanju also questioned Obi’s democratic credentials, saying the former two-term governor of Anambra State has not made the kinds of sacrifices others have for Nigeria’s democratic survival.

The activist added: “What sacrifices has he made for democracy? Many of us have put our lives on the line at great personal cost.

“We must sanitise our polity. We cannot have a country where people who terrorise others online dictate the tone of political discourse.

“In my opinion, I have never voted for a bad candidate. In 1999, I voted for Olusegun Obasanjo. In 2011, I voted for Goodluck Jonathan. In 2015, I voted for Jonathan again, against the so-called lovers of democracy who wanted Muhammadu Buhari.”
