The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who died while in captivity after being abducted by kidnappers.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) expressed deep sorrow over the retired senior officer’s death and extended condolences to his family, colleagues and Nigerians.
The military described the late Major General Abubakar as a distinguished officer who served the nation with dedication in several capacities, including as Director of Defence Information and spokesperson for various military formations.
According to the DHQ, the late general made significant contributions to counter-insurgency operations, the professional development of the armed forces and other national assignments.
The military disclosed that it had refrained from making public comments on his abduction due to ongoing rescue efforts, noting that all available operational resources had been deployed in a bid to secure his safe release.
The Defence Headquarters said the tragic incident has further strengthened the resolve of the armed forces to tackle insecurity and bring perpetrators of kidnappings and terrorism to justice.
It added that security operations have been intensified across the country in response to recent abductions, including that of the retired general, with efforts focused on dismantling terrorist networks and restoring peace and security nationwide.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria will not relent until peace and security are restored and those responsible for terrorist activities across the nation are held to account,” the statement said.
