The average retail price of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), commonly known as diesel, fell to ₦1,361.57 per litre in January 2026 from ₦1,501.58 recorded in January 2025, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.
The agency’s Automotive Gas Oil Price Watch report for January showed the decline represents a 9.32 per cent year-on-year drop. On a month-on-month basis, diesel prices also decreased by 2.86 per cent from ₦1,401.63 per litre recorded in December 2025.
Prices varied across states, with Lagos posting the highest average price at ₦1,560.82 per litre, followed by Akwa Ibom State at ₦1,558.52 and Borno State at ₦1,480.00.
The lowest average prices were recorded in Kogi State at ₦1,200.00, Ogun State at ₦1,230.52, and Zamfara State at ₦1,242.82 per litre.
Zonal analysis showed the North East recorded the highest average diesel price at ₦1,430.96 per litre, while the South East had the lowest at ₦1,288.20.
The report highlights persistent regional disparities in diesel pricing despite the overall nationwide decline.
