A commercial motorcycle rider has been killed and two others injured after a driver allegedly fleeing police officers crashed into them on Liasu Road in the Idimu area of Lagos State.

The incident occurred on Saturday night during a police chase involving a vehicle suspected of being used by internet fraudsters.

The driver reportedly lost control while speeding away from pursuing officers, knocking down three motorcycle riders. The victim died at the scene, while the other two sustained injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital.

The driver and other occupants of the vehicle allegedly abandoned it and fled after the crash.

An eyewitness, identified simply as Wahab, said the vehicle was being chased from the Ile-Iwe end of the road towards Council bus stop when the incident happened.

“They were coming from the Ile-Iwe side when police officers in a minibus tried to stop them. It was in the process that they increased their speed and drove recklessly,” he said.

Wahab added that the driver lost control and rammed into the motorcycle riders, killing one of them on the spot before fleeing with the other occupants.

The vehicle was subsequently towed to the nearest police station.

The incident triggered a protest by commercial motorcycle operators along Powerline and Liasu roads, who suspended operations to demand justice for their colleagues.

A resident, Titi Jayeoba, said the protest left many commuters stranded on Sunday, with residents struggling to find alternative transport to churches and other destinations.

She said the available tricycles could not accommodate all the stranded passengers, while some commuters were unable to reach their streets because the operators would not enter them.

Normalcy reportedly returned later in the evening after the motorcycle operators resumed their services.

The deceased was subsequently buried according to Islamic rites.

When contacted on Tuesday, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, said she was unaware of the incident but promised to provide further information.
